Curriculum Overview

Scientists use a process called X-ray diffraction to figure out the structure of things that are too small to see. This lab helps students understand how light is bent into different directions as it interacts with small objects. Students create and explore their own diffraction gratings, and then predict the structural shape of a tiny diffraction grating that cannot be seen to the naked eye—similar to how scientists determine the structure of crystal lattices, or DNA.
