For those of you joining us this summer, here is some important information:

Recreation Center/Gym

The gym costs $60 for the whole summer. A new addition to the RecCen was recently opened.

Here is a link to check it out: UCSB RecCen

Library

A list of all of your names has been given to the library. After you arrive, all you need to do is go to the front desk at the library and give them your name and the program you are here for (NNIN REU), and they will get you all set up.

Here is a link to our library: UCSB Library

Parking

Since you are all living in the Santa Ynez Apartments, right off campus, you are entitled to a parking permit there if you are bringing your cars with you. Since it is within two miles to campus, you will not be eligible for a commuter permit ('C' permit) and will have to pay to park on campus.

Transportation

Bus: click here for more information.

**Bicycle Rentals**

IV Bicycle Boutique, 880 Embarcadero Del Mar, Isla Vista (805) 968-3338

10 weeks for $75-100 (depending on available stock). Kit Carson, the owner, agreed to this rate (usually it is $75/month).

Basically, you buy the bicycle, and they buy it back from you for a percentage of the price. They will let you borrow a lock for no charge. Helmets run about $20-25 and, although it is not illegal to ride without one, we highly recommend using one. This time of year there are a lot of tourists in Santa Barbara and many people do not think to look for bicycles. You may wish to consider buying or bringing a bike light if you will be riding at night (you'll get a ticket if you ride without one after nightfall).

Accomodations:

For your first three weeks here, June 5–23, you will be staying at the Best Western South Coast Inn, because the student apartments will not be available for moving in until June 24th.  Please check South Coast Inn’s site for driving directions: http://www.bwsci.com/ . South Coast Inn also has a courtesy shuttle available upon your arrival to the airport.  Also, a complimentary shuttle is available for transit between the hotel and campus. Please contact South Coast Inn directly to set up arrangements at (805) 967-3200. Our South Coast Inn reservation confirmation number is 1749.

The apartments are available from June 24th to August 14th. The apartments are 2-bedroom (2 students per room, 4 students per apartment) and are furnished. Listed below are more complete details about what is and isn't provided so you will know how to pack.   The apartments are located on "Storke/Santa Ynez Campus” at the intersection of El Colegio and Los Carneros Roads (20 minute walk or a 10 minute bike ride to campus).  If you would like to see where the apartments are you can view or download a map of the campus from the web site: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/ep_images/goleta_largemap.pdf.  There is a slideshow you can view (click on “slideshow” on the main picture) as well as a QuickTime movie, which you can download, which shows what the apartments look like inside.
