Welcome to the NNIN Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) 2007 Convocation web page!
The following resources are intended for those of you joining us at this year's NNIN REU Convocation. The site will answer questions for both NNIN REU interns and site coordinators. Please note that this website will be updated as new information becomes available so please check back frequently. IMPORTANTANNOUNCEMENTS:
- For those interns, who plan on driving, please plan on arriving to Santa Barbara by 4:00pm on Wednesday.
- Shuttles: Interns, please call this number (805) 893-2626 upon arrival to the Santa Barbara Airport for shuttle service to Santa Ynez Apartments. A UCSB shuttle will pick you up within about 10 minutes of your call.

ACCOMMODATIONS
- Best Western South Coast Inn (housing for REU site coordinators):
Coordinators will be staying at the Santa Barbara Best Western South Coast Inn. Please contact BWSCI directly to confirm hotel arrangements at (805) 967-3200. Coordinators will be responsible for their own South Coast Inn reservation which is being held under "NNIN REU Convocation". The confirmation number is 1411. For driving directions, please visit the Best Western website. The South Coast Inn also has a courtesy shuttle available upon your arrival to the airport.
- Santa Ynez Apartments (housing for REU interns):
Intern housing will be provided by UCSB at the Santa Ynez Apartments and have already been confirmed. Rooms have been reserved from noon on Wednesday August 8, 2007 to noon on Sunday August 12, 2007. The apartments, located at the intersection of El Colegio and Los Carneros Roads (20 minute walk or a 10 minute bike ride to campus), are furnished 2-bedroom units (2 students per room, 4 students per apartment). Room assignments will be emailed to coordinators in July.
There are no live phone lines in the Santa Ynez Apartments, and interns are encouraged to bring cell phones. A landline will be available for use at the Santa Ynez Office for local calls and long distance calling card calls. The Santa Ynez Office will be located in Apartment #237 and interns should contact the office directly with any housing related questions once they are in Santa Barbara. All lodging is available and has been reserved through noon Sunday August 12 and we encourage all participants to stay and explore Santa Barbara as a tourist once Convocation is over Saturday afternoon.
Some important things to keep in mind while staying at the Santa Ynez Apartments: Lost apartment exterior door keys are $50. Lost bedroom door keys are $10. A cleaning fee will be charged to all students residing apartments left in less than perfect condition upon Sunday departure.

Meal Arrangements:
As part of the NNIN REU Convocation, interns will be provided with meals beginning Wednesday night, and ending with Saturday afternoon lunch. Vegetarian options will be available at each meal. Convocation will officially commence Saturday August 11 after presentations are finished, and interns will be responsible for their own dinner that night. Convocation attendees may purchase meals for $10.00 at the UCSB Dining Commons if they wish to, but must pay with credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express only). There are also lots of dining options near the apartments.
Internet Availability:
Free internet access is provided in each apartment, but guests must provide their own computer. On-campus computer labs will also be available at the Davidson Library, 2626 Ellison Hall, and 1203 HSSB. There will be no printing available in the computer labs, except at Davidson Library. Please see the campus map for the locations of these computer labs.
PARKING & TRANSPORTATION
Campus Parking:
Students staying at the Santa Ynez Apartments are entitled to an apartment complex parking permit. For those choosing to bring a vehicle, please keep in mind that it will be necessary to pay daily for on-campus parking ($8 each day).

Getting Around Santa Barbara:
During the convocation, student interns will be provided with a 10-ride bus pass through SBMTD. This pass will be used for transportation to and from the UCSB campus August 9-11 for daily convocation presentations and activities. The SBMTD is also an easy and inexpensive way to get around the Santa Barbara area. Additional bus rides can be purchased for $1.25. Please note that drivers do not give change.

Santa Ynez Apartments will provide shuttle service to and from the Santa Barbara Airport and the Santa Barbara Airbus Goleta Station. This service will be in operation between 7am and 1am. Shuttle service will NOT be available after 1am and to/from the train stations.
Taxi service is also available. Rides between Isla Vista and Downtown Santa Barbara typically cost about $35 each way (it's about 10-12 miles). Here are some numbers you can use:
