Chip Camp

We offer chip camps of varying lengths and difficulties for small groups high school students. The Nanotech Chip Camp is an intensive laboratory experience that will enable students to:

gain a better understanding of integrated circuit systems

understand how the order of steps used in processing affects the outcome

develop procedures which compare change with constancy

model the processes and explain it to someone else

organize what they have learned into a comprehensive display

One day chip camp:

Students learn top-down nanofabrication processes such as photolithography, metal deposition, wet etch, and/or liftoff techniques in the teaching cleanroom. We will guide them through the process while they make a microresistor in various ways.

Longer chip camps:

Longer chip camps will be guided through an exploration of different aspects of what was covered on the first day. This type of investigation involves calculation and analysis, and the results can be used for a science fair project. Two day chip camps are best.

To schedule a chip camp:

Please contact Angela Berensein at (805)893-5999 berenstein@ece.ucsb.edu

Please note that, due to the physical size of the educational clean room, we can only safely accomodate smaller groups of students (8 students). When this clean room moves to its new space in summer of 2008, we will be able to accomodate larger class sizes. We can not organize a Chip Camp for fewer than 6 students.

Past Chip Camps

Our chip camp Hall of Fame has moved to a new page. You can view it here.
